Plusnet ISP has reduced the length of the contracts of its broadband offerings from 12 to 18 months.

The cancellation policy has also been amended by the ISP. According to the new policy, Plusnet customers can terminate their service at anytime without the need to pay for the outstanding subscription that they owe to the provider. However, they would need to pay for just any setup cost or for any hardware they took durig the contract.

New cancellation policy would apply to new Plusnet home broadband customers as well as the existing customers.

PlusNet currently offers broadband only and broadband & home bundles to its customers. Its broadband packages include evening and weekend local, national calls to customers as well as 300 minutes of international calls.

Anthony Vollmer, CEO of Plusnet, said:

“Moving to shorter commitment periods allows customers so much more flexibility. We want our customers to stay with us because they love our phone and broadband products, not because we have tied them into lengthy contracts”

AB Internet has extended its City Centre wi-fi coverage over the entire city of Lincoln. The expansion of wi-fi broadband will benefit residents, students, police and city authorities.

Lincoln city in the UK has joined hands with the local internet service provider, AB Internet to setup a chain of wi-fi hotspots that will cover the entire city.

The ISP’s City Centre network of public wi-fi hotspots that was launched in February this year is extended to most areas in Lincoln city and the city residents & businesses can get wireless broadband access for £2 per day, it was reported. The city-wide wireless broadband service will benefit city authorities, police and students at Lincoln University

Neil Tucker, the marketing director of AB Internet said to itpro.co.uk:

“We are building the first sustainable UK Wi-Fi city networks and that sustainability gives us the latitude to provide bigger coverage,”

He further said the provider want to bring the benefits of wireless broadband to everyone in the city.

City Councillor, Darren Grice feels that the wi-fi network roll out ‘is a fantastic opportunity to bring this historic city further into the twenty-first century’. He further said: “It’s a good example of organisations working together to bring about something that will benefit everyone.”

AB Internet will focus on rural areas where high-speed broadband service or fibre optic network has not penetrated yet, the ISP said. The businesses and the home users in these areas need ‘a business model’ that the company would aim at, Neil Tucker concluded.

UK broadband provider, TalkTalk has managed to add 47,000 new broadband subscribers during the first quarter, according to the interim statement from its parent company, the Carphone Warehouse. This shows decline from 74,000 of the previous quarter numbers. The ISP had acquired Tiscali whose broadband customers will be added to TalkTalk during the next quarter.

UK’s top broadband provider, the Carphone Warehouse has released the interm financial statement for the first quarter, 2009. The Carphone Warehouse currently, owns AOL UK and TalkTalk internet service providing companies and the main susidiary, TalkTalk is reported to have added 47,000 new broaband customers, according to the latest figures available. Now, TalkTalk has 2.85 million broadband subscribers in the UK.

It should be noted that TalkTalk has acquired Tiscali UK broadband provider in May that cost the ISP over £236m, it was earlier reported.

However, comparing to previous quarter figures, the net addition of broadband customers shows a significant decline. TalkTalk had made 74,000 new additions to its broadband customers during last quarter and the net addition of 47,000 new subscribers during this quarter shows 50 percent fall in growth in broband subscriptions.

Charles Dunstone, the CEO of TalkTalk said:

“TalkTalk Group is trading well, in line with our expectations. We added 47,000 net new customers to our broadband base and average customer spend is up 5% year-on-year. We migrated a further 59,000 customers onto our own network in the quarter and we now have 79% of all our broadband customers on our unbundled network, leveraging the superior economics that it gives us.

TalkTalk’s leading value proposition and strong customer service clearly continue to resonate strongly in today’s marketplace, and churn has declined significantly year-on-year and remains low.”

By the first week of July, TalkTalk was said to have complted the takeover of Tiscali UK division. However, TakTalk can add the number of Tiscali broadband customers to its customer base during the second quarter and the next quarterly statement from TalkTalk provider will be announed in the first week of October, 2009.
